What is the difference between Slim fit, regular fit and skinny fit?

When it comes to shopping for new articles of clothing, one of the most common dilemmas and questions shoppers face is deciphering the various fits available for trousers, jackets, shirts and more. Terms like slim fit, regular fit, and skinny fit are often used leaving people perplexed about their definitions and the differences between them. Lets delve into the nuances of each fit, to ensure you make the right choices to suit your style and body shape next time you are on the look out for some new pieces to add to your wardrobe.

What Do They All Mean?

Slim Fit: This category of clothing is designed to provide a tailored look without being restrictive or uncomfortable. The slim fit style is characterised by a closer or tighter fit to the body, particularly around the chest for t-shirt and shirts and in the legs of jeans and trousers. Slim fit garments often offer more of a modern and streamlined silhouette and enhances the body shape. It provides a fashionable, polished look that is suitable for most activities and can be worn to both formal and casual occasions. While this look is definitely one to consider, you should also know that this style of slim fit clothing may not be as comfortable for those used to a looser, oversized wardrobe.

Regular Fit: Also commonly called classic fit or relaxed fit, this style is designed to offer a more traditional and loose feel. Each piece will provide ample room in the chest, waist and sleeves which allows for easy movement and a relaxed, comfortable appearance. Regular fit garments are versatile and suitable for a wide range of body shapes and styles, but are often favoured by those that like prioritising comfort over a snug, polished look. As a style, this is perfect for people who prefer an understated, timeless outfit as this form of garment shape tends to have a slightly looser silhouette.

Skinny Fit: The skinny fit look is often characterised by its close-fitting design that contours to every body shape. It is a fit that is particularly popular among those who prefer a fashion-forward and edgy appearance. Skinny fit garments are narrow through the chest in t-shirts, shirts and jackets and tight on the hips, legs and waist in jeans, shorts and trousers. This creates a sleek and elongated silhouette while offering a stylish, contemporary vibe. It is important to consider that this fit of clothing can be less forgiving on individuals with a stockier build and slightly less worn by those who love and prioritise comfort. It is essential you choose the right sized skinny fit garments for your day-to-day wear as if you opt for a size too small, this could restrict movement.

The Key Differences

The main differences between slim fit, regular fit and skinny fit clothing items lie in their overall appearance and style. Let’s take a closer look at the differences.

Fit

Slim fit garments offer a close fit that follows the contour of the body for a tailored appearance and skinny fit will have a tight-fitting design that hugs and clings to the body for a sleek look complimenting your body shape. On the other hand, a regular fit provides more overall comfort and a relaxed appearance with better ability for movement.

Silhouette

Regular fit clothing offers a timeless style with a looser silhouette for more comfort, slim fit is a modern and streamlined appearance that accentuates your body shape and skinny fit provides a sleek, elongated silhouette for a fashion-forward, trendy appearance.

Comfort

While all styles and fits are designed and made to be comfortable, this will depend on your specific preferences. Some people love wearing skinny fit jeans and find them to be the best option for their go-to looks and daily life however for others they may be too tight and irritating. On the other hand regular fit and slim fit are less figure hugging and allow for more movement meaning some people are more likely to opt for this when choosing pieces for their wardrobe.

In conclusion, in the world of fashion, understanding the difference between slim fit, regular fit and skinny fit clothing can help you make confident and informed decisions when updating your wardrobe. These fits are available in modern pieces found in highstreet stores as well as an online vintage shop that sell timeless designs from previous years. Considering your preferences and trying out differing pieces, cuts and fits will enable you develop a wardrobe you feel most confident in, ensuring you look your best no matter the outfit you choose that day.

Which generation wore the best outfits?

Fashion has always come around in cycles, with each generation having an influence on those that come in the future. However, this doesn't happen immediately. The generation that follows directly after will most likely question their fashion predecessors and think, "Why on earth did they wear that?". There are also classic pieces that have been passed down through the ages and they are still in our wardrobes. Nevertheless, there have been some fabulous fashions over the last century, but each had a unique style that made them stand out from the others.

Modern fashion often combines aspects of previous generations to create an entirely new look. In addition to this, modern fashion moves a lot faster than in the past. This shift can be attributed to social media and the internet.

In previous years, you had to go shopping to find a piece that you wanted, and if it was sold out, you often had to queue up to get your hands on a popular item. Nowadays, this is all digitalised. The internet has provided a whole new space to get fashion inspiration and also to buy new clothing. As a result of this, we have a lot more reach and can receive outfits the next day (if not sooner), so we find trends moving a lot faster than they did previously. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean there are fewer "iconic" looks of the decade as clothing is tossed aside when it's no longer trending. Let's take a brief look at some of our favourite generations of fashion.

Swinging '60s

At Relco, we may be slightly biased, but the 1960s were definitely some of the most iconic years in fashion. The 1960s were not only a shift in fashion, it was a shift in most aspects of pop culture. This includes film, entertainment, music, art, and fashion. The 60s were particularly interesting for fashion, as there were many different styles of clothing introduced. Vintage patterned shirts such as paisley and polka dot became all the rage as the 60s moved towards colour and loud patterns.

The 1960s also brought flared trousers and mini skirts, something which was very against the grain of the decades before. As young people would typically mimic the clothing that their parents would wear. The 60s was the first movement towards a bolder style of fashion, so this really set the tone for the years moving forward. And of course, with the bias previously mentioned, we need to give a special reference to mod fashion, which was one of the movements that influenced the 60s fashion and has been influencing fashion since its birth. The short kind of jackets like the bomber or the Harrington, the mix between the old days' style and the bold style clothing converged in this unique movement that still has its admirers these days, like us.

1970s Disco Fever

The 1970s brought a disco revolution that influenced fashion in a significant way. Disco culture was all about glitz, glamour, and excess. Shimmering fabrics, bold prints, and platform shoes were the go-to choices for partygoers. The iconic disco looks for men included wide-collar shirts, bell-bottom pants, and flashy accessories. This era embraced a sense of freedom and self-expression, with disco clubs becoming the epicentre of fashion and dance. The disco fashion of the 70s continues to inspire retro-themed parties and nostalgic fashion enthusiasts.

1980s Neon

Now, this is a highly debated topic. Was 1980s neon iconic or tacky? Whilst fashion gurus never quite came up with an answer to this question, 1980s neon was one of a kind. Another style of note was high-waisted jeans, something that was denounced in the early 2000s and brought back around 2014. Whilst the 1980s brought big hair and big fashion ideas, we can't help but think that it wasn't necessarily our favourite.

1990s Grunge

Millennials of today are a far cry from what they wore in their youth. The arrival of the 1990s grunge brought themes of oversized clothing, gothic eyeliner, and ripped jeans. However, it also brought forward an idea that started in the 1980s, which was casual wear. This resulted in sportswear becoming fashion and brands like Nike, Kappa, and Ellesse. 90s fashion had a heavy influence on not only clothes but also hair, beauty, and tattoos. It was one of the first decades where tattoos were featured in mainstream fashion, and the famous lower back tattoo will haunt people's memories forever, and some bodies too.

2000s Streetwear and Pop Culture

The 2000s marked a shift towards streetwear and the influence of pop culture on fashion. This era saw the rise of iconic brands like Supreme, BAPE, and Off-White, which popularized a casual and edgy aesthetic. Hip-hop and skateboarding culture played a significant role in shaping the fashion of the 2000s, with baggy jeans, oversized hoodies, and graphic t-shirts becoming staple items. Celebrity fashion also gained prominence, with iconic looks from artists like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Beyoncé influencing trends. The 2000s fashion continues to inspire contemporary streetwear and the fusion of music and fashion in popular culture.

The question of "Which generation wore the best outfits?" is a difficult one, as most decades offered a look that is still worn today so that warrants giving each generation credit where credit's due. However, we have to say that the swinging '60s were definitely the best in terms of the iconic looks and cultural shift that occurred. Moreover, we can still see mod clothing shops and looks that remind us of that vibrant era. Continue reading

These linen shirts can be found in a variation of colours, styles and fits, including neutrals, fun patterns, long and short sleeves, fitted or oversized. You will be able to find a collection that suits your own style. Pair your new linen shirts with straight-leg trousers or shorts for a casual look, or dress them up with chinos and boots for a formal occasion.

Denim Shorts

Trendy, comfortable and another staple classic! Denim shorts are a versatile piece that can be paired with almost any item for a stylish summer look. Available in slim-fit, relaxed-fit and high-waisted, there are denim shorts for anyone and everyone! The easy-to-wear denim shorts are perfect for any summer day and can be worn to the beach, the city, or for fun activities with the family. Smart Trousers

Smart vintage trousers are a great addition to a summer wardrobe. Their timeless appeal comes from their versatility; you can dress these trousers up or down depending on the occasion. Pair them with boots and a shirt for dinner with friends, or simply add a white t-shirt and sandals for a laid-back look. They are available in easy-to-wear colours and patterns, including khaki, navy and pinstripe, and the thin fabric allows the air to flow so you can feel the summer breeze.

Accessorise Your Outfits

Accessorising is an essential part of any summer look to elevate your outfit. Statement pieces such as bold necklaces and earrings can instantly transform a basic pair of shorts and t-shirts into a stylish ensemble. Sunglasses are a must-have accessory for summer months; not only do they protect your eyes, but they add a touch of sophistication to a look. Hats are another fun accessory. Whether it's a wide-brimmed sun hat, a trendy bucket hat or a cap, they provide both style and sun protection. Other accessories, including belts and bags, will also add a feature to your outfit. When accessories choose pieces that complement your outfit rather than overpowering it.

Add a Thin Jacket

Thin jackets are a great way to add an extra layer to your look in the evenings once the sun has started to set. Two popular options for thin jackets during the hotter seasons are the Harrington jacket and blazers. Harrington jackets are the perfect option for casual days out or a night in the city. They feature a zip-up front and button collar and provide comfort and style. Blazers are the perfect alternative to a jacket in the summer months. They can be dressed up for a fancy event or dressed down with shorts and trainers. Blazers are perfect for a smart casual look.

In conclusion, vintage fashion is the best way to stay stylish and comfortable in the hotter months. From easy-to-wear shirts, dresses and trousers, there are endless possibilities when it comes to vintage fashion in summer. How to match your accessories with your clothes

Learn our men’s 60s mod fashion tips on how to match your accessories with your clothes

Having a well put together outfit is crucial for representing your personal style. Your accessories are what tie together your ensemble and set you apart from the crowd. It can be easy to collate a good outfit with the right inspiration, but accessories can be slightly more difficult. Men’s 60s mod fashion has a specific and iconic look that makes a statement when it is properly replicated. However, to make it a little easier, we’ve got some tips for you on how to match your accessories with your clothes.

Decide On Your Colour Palette

Whether you’re accessorising men's 60s mod fashion or any other era of fashion, deciding on a colour palette or finding colours that complement each other is very important. Your accessories and colours don’t have to be matching, they just need to look good together! A colour wheel can help you as it will show you which shades go together well. To make it easier, you can also choose base colours that regularly feature in your outfit. This will help when choosing accessories as you’ll soon pick up which colours go best with this base colour. Your accessories can also be used to add a pop of colour to a neutral outfit. For example, if your outfit is made of black suit trousers and a white polo shirt, you could accessorise with a brightly colour scarf or hat.

Find A Balance With Your Patterns

Men’s 60s mod fashion features a lot of funky patterns. When dressing in mod style, you’re lucky enough to be choosing from paisley, chequered and psychedelic print shirts. However, as exciting as it can be to have these patterns to choose from, it’s important to balance these with non-patterned pieces. Having too many patterns can make your outfit look cluttered and overwhelming. To avoid this, you can pair patterned shirts with non-patterned trousers and a plain parker or bomber jacket.
This can also be applied to accessories. If you’re wearing a paisley shirt, you’ll need to pair it with a plain scarf or hat. Also, this works vice versa if you’re wearing a plain shirt; you can accessorise with patterned pieces.

Use Clothes Of The Same Era

When creating an authentic mod look, it’s important to use accessories that are from the mod era. However, this can also be applied when creating outfits other than with mod fashion. Accessories from different fashion eras typically don’t complement each other, so normally it’s best to keep to the same when matching clothes to accessories.

Mix Materials To Add Depth

Your clothes and accessories don’t have to be of the same materials. In fact, it can add more depth if you choose accessories made from different materials to your clothing. For example, you could wear a hat made from knitted wool and match this with a corduroy bomber jacket. This makes your outfits stand out, and your accessories will enhance the ensemble you already have.

Men’s 60s mod fashion is an iconic era with many style options to choose from. Mod fashion is a great era to inspire your outfits, and with its classic look, you’ll stand out from the crowd. Mod fashion also provides a good basis for you to accessorise your clothes as there is a wide range of items to choose from. When matching your accessories to your clothes, it’s of the utmost importance to consider how the patterns, materials and colours would go together. Most of all, you should like how your accessories look! Continue reading

Best Jackets for Autumn

As the seasons change and the weather grows colder, now is the time to revisit your wardrobe and pull out some new pieces that will reflect your personal style as well as keep you warm through the autumn and winter months.

Throw out your old ragged coats and jackets and start the season with some seriously cool, quality vintage jackets that take you back to the best times of your life every time you wear them.

Harrington jackets

Perfect for autumn evenings or a stylish outer layer during the day, these are the most versatile vintage jackets on the scene that come in a range of colours to suit any style.

First made popular in the 1960’s by TV character Rodney Harrington, these jackets have remained popular throughout the decades because of their high quality and unexpected inner lining of tartan.

It’s easy to see why these jackets have earned their status in the retro clothing industry, as they embody the sophisticated yet tough aspects of masculinity. The design creates a broad shoulder and puffed-out silhouette while the cut and colour of the jacket keeps things smart, meaning you can wear this jacket to any occasion.

As the cold weather grows harsher in December and January, the Harrington jacket has the room to layer underneath with a cardigan or a jumper without limiting your mobility as so many other jackets do. Plus, our stone Harrington jacket keeps your Summery feel even in the colder season.

Their naturally oversized fit means they can be paired with existing items in your wardrobe to add flare to your outfit and give a nod to the mods who will recognise your style instantly.

Monkey jackets

Another popular jacket among mods are the classic monkey jackets which are similar to Harringtons but instead of a rigid collar and outer trim, an elasticated, striped collar featured on the neckline along with matching cuffs and bottom trim.

These vintage jackets have a similar fit to the Harrington as they also resemble a classic bomber jacket, but in most cases they do not have the tartan lining.

These were a popular choice for those who identified with mod culture as they are of high quality and have a sophisticated style to them that makes any man appear well groomed and put together. The rounded design creates an aura of toughness and masculinity for the wearer as it emphasises the shoulders and back.

Paired well with a smart shirt, some straight leg jeans and leather boots, these jackets are the ideal finishing touch to any vintage outfit that represents authentic and deep understanding of the history behind it and what mod culture is really about.

Overcoats

Mens overcoats are a perfect choice when it comes to preparing for winter and choosing a jacket that will protect all your layers from wind and rain. Traditionally, these were made by Crombie and were made of wool.

These were designed to reach the knee and are single breasted, black structured coats that are designed to look very smart and sit perfectly over a smart shirt and two tone trousers

These have been remade by many designers all over the world and are popular for their simple but sleek aesthetic that not only fit in with mod culture, but with many cultures globally.

You will be able to find copies of these vintage jackets in many high street stores, but not many will stock the original vintage design that is so hard to find after it has been heavily adapted by high street retailers.

Parkas

If you’re part of mod culture, then you will undoubtedly have a parka jacket in your wardrobe, and if you don’t, you need one!

These jackets are a staple in every mod’s collection and were often worn by legends of the game such as Oasis and The Rolling Stones who wanted to keep their Italian suits in good condition, protected from the wind and rain.

Parkas have a military quality to them, coming in dark green or khaki colours and often decorated with patches or badges from the wearer’s favourite band.

Over time, this vintage jacket has been adapted to suit many styles but the original has remained popular throughout the decades and is considered the signature piece of Liam and Noel Gallagher, worn on stage no matter what the weather.

Blazers

Lastly, perhaps one of the most iconic pieces of menswear available, the blazer. First made popular in the early 1800’s by boating clubs, these jackets have taken so many twists and turns since then that most will have forgotten about the original vintage style, but not us.

A vintage jacket such as the blazer must be executed authentically, featuring vertical pin stripes and classic tailoring that flatter any gentlemans figure. It must be comfortable, and compliment a mod’s outfit with class and sophistication. The best place to buy these will always be in retro clothing stores that are able to replicate the traditional design.

Most commonly worn in navy and black, blazers have remained a solid outfit choice for men across the globe for decades and are available in a range of fits and styles.

It is crucial that the quality of the blazer is second to none, from the fabric to the measurements, otherwise the wearer risks looking cheap or scruffy, something every mod would want to avoid.

Although they are vintage jackets, these are all pieces that will never go out of style and will simply be adapted and changed to the current market’s requirements. For those who want to revive mod culture and stay true to who they are, these jackets are an essential part of their collections and should be well looked after to ensure they can look smart all through autumn and winter.

History Of The Paisley Shirt

Anyone who is interested in retro clothing will be well aware of the popularity and significance of the classic paisley shirt. In the current day, this pattern is often worn on shirts and ties, as a colourful but smart element to any outfit. Most often worn by men, they come in a range of shades and styles, some brighter and bolder than others.

You might be curious about how exactly this pattern came to be on a shirt, and why it became popular during a certain era, so let’s not waste any more time and delve into the history of the paisley shirt.

The origin of the paisley pattern

The paisley pattern dates back centuries, starting in the 11th century where it was first made in India near Kashmir. The pattern itself features a cypress tree with a floral spray that traditionally represents life and fertility, acting as a good luck token to anyone who wears it.

It became even more popular in the 16th century when kashmir shawls were made which had the print on fabric that was made with woven goats hair. These garments were often worn by people of importance, as they were very expensive to make. Often worn by royalty, these were considered as ‘robes of honour’ and following this, they slowly made their way into Europe.

They ended up in the wardrobes of the rich and famous in the 16th century after being given as gifts to European officers by those coming over from India, although for a long time these remained too expensive for the average person to afford.

In the 19th century, the pattern finally gained its name ‘paisley’ as these were mostly made in the town ‘Paisley’ located in Scotland, where the majority of Kashmir-inspired shawls were produced at the time. Many believe that the pattern originated in Scotland because of this, but in fact, it originated long before this in India.

When did it become popular?

In more recent years, the paisley pattern gained popularity during the 60’s and 70’s when loud, bright and bold colours were worn by anyone and everyone. This came following the influence of psychedelic style and a new genre of music that promoted love and peace.

This print was everywhere during this revolutionary time, on flared trousers, suits and womens dresses, as people wanted to make a statement about their identity and their beliefs.

After this, paisley’s popularity began to decline as the use of colours and patterns calmed down, but it did make a comeback during the 1990s when it was adapted by rock ‘n’ roll culture, and several celebrities made a point of wearing it to keep the pattern alive and in fashion.

Because of this, the pattern was frequently used as accents to an outfit, on bandanas, mens ties and handkerchiefs, and is even still used in high end designers pieces such as GUCCI who still produce their own versions of a paisley shirt today.

In the current day, paisley shirts are the most common item to feature this iconic pattern, however the original retro designs can be hard to come by. Our own paisley shirts are made with nostalgia in mind, keeping the design as bright and colourful as it would have been in India all those centuries ago.

Who wears paisley?

Paisley was made popular in the 1960s following the likes of Mick Jagger, The Beatles, David Bowie and Queen who would wear outrageous outfits often featuring this gregarious print during their shows.

The Beatles were so mad about Paisley that John Lennon even painted his car in the classic print, while the rest often sported paisley scarves and shirts that would be copied by the masses as a symbolic piece of 70s culture and the attitudes that governed that time.

Fast forward to the 1990s where bands such as Oasis revived the print and it became adopted as a part of modern rock ‘n’ roll culture.

What can it be worn with?

When wearing a paisley print, there are a few things to consider. The first are the elements of the outfit - will you wear it on the top or bottom, or simply accessorise with it?

If you are planning to wear it on the top, you should definitely opt for a paisley shirt, and perhaps consider the colour that you would like to wear. For a formal occasion, a dark blue print will help you to appear smart and elegant, with a nod to retro fashion.

If you are planning to wear it on the bottom, go you! Why not make a bold statement and go full on retro clothing style with some wide leg paisley print trousers to really take it back to the 60’s.

For a subtle and suave nod to the history of paisley, consider adding a paisley print handkerchief in the front pocket of your suit, or a paisley scarf to liven up a plain white shirt. For a look that can be worn while out with friends or into the office, a paisley tie is a popular choice for modern men who want to bring a touch of personality to their style.

Not many prints have become quite so symbolic as the paisley print, but even so, most who recognise it might not know where it came from or how it came to be so popular. After reading this blog, you should feel confident wearing your next paisley piece and maybe even motivated to buy some more. After all, it doesn’t look like it’s going out of fashion anytime soon! How To Wear Two Tone Looking Clothes

Originating in Coventry in the 1970s, two-tone was a new music genre born from the combination of Jamaican reggae with a punk attitude. As a result of this music, a style to match was born, and those who identified with the movement found themselves dressing in two-tone clothing such as Harrington jackets, Dr Martens boots and pencil skirts to express themselves.

What is Two-Tone Clothing?

Worn by rude boys and rude girls who were into two-tone music, which was heavily influenced by ska and Jamaican reggae, the two-tone style was symbolic of the ska and mod revival in the late 70s and is still influential in today’s fashion. Bands such as The Specials, The Selecter and The Beat aimed to diffuse racial tension during tough times in Britain and instead celebrated the fusion of two cultures in which two-tone was born.

Two-tone clothing was first popular in the 1960s when mod and skinhead cultures crossed over, and this developed into the two-tone movement of the late 70s, which would continue to be prevalent into the 1980s, too.

Now, two-tone pieces like our vintage burgundy shirt are iconic of the late 1900s are still popular with many pieces found in most wardrobes today, and two-tone itself saw many subcultures produced as a result, including third-wave ska and ska punk.

What Pieces Are Typical Of Two Tone Style?

There is a clear distinction between men's and women’s two-tone fashion, with each gender wearing specific pieces to show their commitment to the movement and appear recognisable in the streets to everyone who saw.

Men would typically sport a shaved head or buzz cut, a fitted polo shirt, perhaps with a pair of braces over the top, clipped onto a straight leg or drainpipe trousers which would be cropped to show off white socks or the tops of their Dr Martens shiny leather boots. The style was very clean cut and sharp and would be finished off with a Harrington jacket or bomber jacket over the top. Trilby hats were also popular among men, perhaps when heading to a night out.

Ladies would often shave the backs of their heads and leave the front fringe long, wearing tight pencil skirts, swing dresses or pinafores, and of course, a pair of Dr Martens to match.

Typically, these clothing items would be in dogtooth or check styles, symbolic of two-tone and ska culture. These patterns have trickled into the mainstream, still printed by designers and fashion retailers alike.

Many of these pieces have remained popular in modern-day culture, such as bomber jackets, Harrington Jackets and especially Dr Martens, that have risen in popularity in the last few years.

Where can I find Two Tone clothing?

You will likely find traditional two-tone styles in retro clothing shops or boutiques that specifically cater for this style.

If you are after genuine vintage two-tone items, you can search online for the specific style you want and find some authentic pieces from the late 1970s, or alternatively, some brand new pieces that have been produced in the same style that was made originally.

When shopping for two-tone clothing, you should look out for retro-style clothing that fits well, as two-tone styles were often high-quality, well fitted items as opposed to baggy or oversized styles. You should choose the colours of two-tone clothing wisely, too. Black and white were popular in line with dogtooth and check patterns, although navy blues and burgundy were also popular colours in the two-tone scene.

How To Style Two Tone Clothing

For an authentic retro look, you should stick to the specific two-tone style that was so popular in the late 70s. This included particular outfits for men and women and specific brands of shoes. You could even go as far as getting the haircut that was popular, though that might be a bit extreme for some people.

If you want to wear two-tone clothing with just a nod to the movement from the 1970s, you could wear a stone Harrington jacket over the top of your jeans and t-shirt, or women could wear a pencil skirt paired with their top of choice.

Dr Martens are considered very fashionable nowadays and are paired with all sorts of styles. A good pair of boots from this brand gives a subtle nod to the two-tone culture they were symbolic of 50 years ago.

Many will mimic two-tone styles without realising, which shows the impact this movement had on fashion and its lasting effects. For example, a man who wears a check shirt, dogtooth straight-leg trousers and black boots to a dinner party might not realise that his outfit is derived from two-tone culture, but it still carries the air of smart casual, which is suitable for so many events.

After reading this article, you should feel confident in putting a two-tone style outfit together, where to find the best pieces and where the style originated from. You might have even learned that you already have some two-tone style clothes in your wardrobe, and be ready to start showcasing your new two-tone style!

How To Look After A Harrington Jacket

A Harrington jacket is a piece that should, undoubtedly, be in every wardrobe. Worn for decades by some of the biggest names, this is a jacket that can be worn all year round in a range of different colours and styles and look effortlessly cool every single time. While it could be considered a piece of retro clothing, plenty of retailers still produce these every year as they remain popular with consumers for their smart and adaptable style.

How to store a Harrington jacket

First of all, your Harrington jacket should ideally be kept in a wardrobe or enclosed space away from sunlight. This is to keep it away from direct light that could cause fading over a long period of time, which might happen if it was hung on a hook in an open space, for example.

Harrington jackets often come in dark colours such as black, burgundy or blue, which will be susceptible to fading in direct sunlight.

Your Harrington jacket should ideally be kept in the wardrobe while hung up to maintain its structure, but if there is no space for this, keeping it neatly folded in storage on a shelf should also help maintain its quality.

While you are not wearing the jacket, it is recommended that you regularly clean the space it is stored in to prevent dust or dirt from damaging it.

Get to know your jacket

To look after your Harrington jacket, you must know exactly what to do with it. The type of care needed might vary depending on the fabric or make of the jacket, so you should be sure to ask the seller for the cleaning instructions when purchasing.

If you cannot ask the seller how to care for the jacket, you will be able to check the inside label, which should be sewn into the jacket's inner seam. Here, you will find washing instructions which should tell you how to wash it and what kind of temperature it can tolerate.

If you bought the jacket recently from an online store, you might also be able to check the care instructions on the website or by contacting the retailer for more information.

How to wash a Harrington jacket

Your Harrington jacket should be hand washed to avoid any of the colour running, especially on those that feature a wool tartan lining as they traditionally did. Putting such a jacket through a hot wash risks deforming the fabric lining, which could ruin your jacket.

Instead, wash your jacket in the sink with cool water and a light detergent. Scrub the jacket gently to remove any dirt, and treat any stains that might have gotten onto the jacket over time.

Rinse the jacket off with cool water and hang it up to air dry, do not put it in the tumble dryer as this could also deform the fabric or even shrink the jacket.

You should only need to wash your Harrington jacket once every couple of months, depending on how regularly you wear it outdoors. If it is in storage, you should aim to wash it every six months to keep it fresh and dispel any debris that might have gathered during storage.

How long will a Harrington jacket last?

Ultimately, how long your jacket lasts depends on how frequently you wear it and where you bought it. If you purchased your Harrington from a retro clothing store, chances are the quality will be very good, and a true vintage jacket will stand the test of time, especially when cared for correctly.

However, if you have purchased from a modern retailer who mass-produced cheap clothing, you should expect it to wear out much faster than a high-quality alternative.

The quality of the Harrington will largely depend on the price. If you plan on keeping your jacket for a long time, possibly even forever, it is wise to invest in a new but classic style of Harrington from a retailer that specialises in producing new, high-quality retro style clothing.

Styling a Harrington jacket

The best way to care for your Harrington jacket is, of course, to wear it! Such an iconic jacket that has been so popular since the 1950s can be worn with any outfit for the perfect smart casual look.

If you want an authentic vintage look, pair your Harrington jacket with straight leg or drainpipe trousers, a smart fitted polo shirt and some Dr Martens boots. To soften the look, consider swapping the boots for another smart leather shoe or possibly even trainers.

For a more modern look, pair with some casual jeans and trainers, with your t-shirt of choice underneath. In the colder months, add an extra layer by wearing a jumper or hoodie underneath the jacket, which keeps you warm and adds some depth to your image.

After reading this blog, you should be confident in how to look after your Harrington jacket in terms of storing, washing and wearing. It is important to learn about how to care for this jacket as it is such a wardrobe staple, and one that you will always turn to when achieving a put-together cool outfit in seconds.

Which are the best outfits to wear to a BBQ?

Choosing an outfit for a BBQ can be tricky as it’s important to find something that you will be able to stay cool in while also looking fashionable amongst your family and friends. Most of the time, BBQ’s are casual events where you can expect to be eating hand held food like burgers and hotdogs, so wearing your best dress might not be the best idea!

Looking good at a BBQ has never been so easy with our top tips on what to wear to these classic British occasions.

Patterned shirts

As a man heading out to a BBQ, sometimes a T-shirt might feel a little too casual, especially if the BBQ is for a particular occasion such as a birthday or celebration. In times like this, a patterned shirt is the perfect option as it can be paired with jeans or shorts of any kind and still smarten up the outfit. Wear it tucked into your trousers with a nice belt for the smartest look, or to dress it down slightly you could leave it untucked.

Many patterns are available on shirts including:

  • Checkered shirts
  • Paisley shirts
  • Polka dot shirts
  • Floral shirts

To keep to the theme of spring and summer, a floral shirt would be a great choice for a BBQ!

Long skirts

For ladies attending a BBQ, long skirts are a great way to keep cool while looking the part among family and friends. These are a staple part of women's attire and have been popular for decades, with varying lengths and styles being popular at different times. For a 90’s look, opt for a flowy, low waisted denim skirt, or for an 80’s look, go for a high waisted number with bright colours and patterns.

The great thing about skirts is that they will never go out of fashion, and are a symbol of feminine beauty and style that will be admired by all those at the BBQ.

Polo shirts

The history of these shirts date back to the 6th century and were originally made for use in sports games such as tennis or golf, but now they are popular among men and women of all ages and are a great option that sits in between t-shirts and shirts in terms of formality.

Polo shirts can be long or short sleeved and have been replicated by many famous designers that put their own logo on the front corner. These shirts can be bought in baggy or fitted styles depending on how comfortable you want to be, and look great tucked into trousers or shorts

Dresses

Dresses are the perfect attire to any BBQ as they come in all shapes and styles and are well suited to warm weather. For a BBQ, a casual dress might be the best solution in a light cotton fabric to stay comfortable for a long time and move around freely. For casual occasions, dresses that are made in a soft stretchy fabric are the best choice as you can sit or stand in them, and maybe play a bit of sport with your family if you feel like it!

The great thing about dresses is that they come in three different lengths. Mini, midi and maxi. For a BBQ, you will likely be outside for a long period of time and so a midi or maxi length may be the best option to protect your legs from the sun. However, if you are attending a BBQ that might turn into a party in the evening a mini skirt would be a great choice, too.

Shorts

As BBQ’s tend to happen in the warmer months of the year, you might want to seize the rare opportunity to let your legs run free and maybe even catch a tan. Not only are they suitable for the summer weather, but they’re also very comfortable to wear as you can sit, stand and run while looking smart.

You can purchase different styles of shorts, depending on how formal you would like to appear. For a dressier style, consider wearing some chino or tailored shorts with a nice belt and shirt tucked in, or for a more casual look you could choose some denim shorts or even swimming shorts if there is a pool at your destination!

Light Jackets

For the evenings, it is always best to carry a lightweight jacket as it will no doubt get colder when the sun has gone down. For men, a classic harrington jacket is a great option that will go well with a polo shirt or t-shirt while for women a vintage denim jacket or cardigan are great options to throw on over a dress.

Blazers are very fashionable this year, so ladies might also choose an oversized vintage blazer to dress up their outfit even further in the evening, while oversized bomber jackets are pooluar among men and are a great way to keep warm next to the fire in the summer evenings.

Conclusion

BBQ’s are something that we all look forward to every year and are often considered to be a sign that summer has begun as British people rush to get their BBQ out as soon as it hits 20 degrees. Now that you have read this blog hopefully you feel prepared to attend your first BBQ and confident that you will be one of the best dressed there every single time.

Vintage Clothing | The Meanings And Origins Of Different Patterns

What are the meanings and origins of different patterns?

Introduction

Have you ever noticed that some patterns are everywhere while others go in and out of style? Some patterns, like stripes or plaid, have been around for centuries while others might be considered a passing trend. Even though we usually see them as an expression of style or taste from an individual or group, there's a rich history to the ways these designs have been used throughout the ages, and they are often considered as vintage clothing. Let’s take a look at some of the classic examples that everyone will recognise.

Polka dots

Polka dots are a simple, fun and playful pattern that have been around since the 18th century. The origins of polka dots can be traced back to their Czech origin as they were originally used on clothing by men and women following a popular peasant dance called the ‘polka’. During this time, there were all sorts of ‘polka’ themed items that were sold in shops such as suspenders and even pudding, but the pattern is the one that stuck through to the current day.

In the 1920s, when fashion was all about being modern and inventive, these designs were widely used in clothing because they looked so different from what people had seen before. You might remember Minnie Mouse and her polkadot skirt from the first Disney films, for example. This was highly influential during such time and celebrities were often seen wearing polkadot patterns.

Today, polka dots are often seen advertised as vintage styles on mens shirts or children’s clothes as they look great with most styles of clothing and can brighten up any outfit!

Animal print

Animal print is a classic design. It's fun, playful and often looks great in fashion. But what is the meaning of animal print?

Animal prints have been popular for centuries. They were first used as camouflage on animals (so they could blend into their environment), but also became popular in fashion as people took inspiration from wildlife and started wearing them too.

Today, many different patterns are seen as animal prints including:

  • Leopard print
  • Zebra print
  • Cow-print
  • Snake print
  • Tiger print

As time goes on, each of these patterns go in and out of fashion. It gained popularity in the 1970’s after it was seen in pop videos and used in house decor to create an exotic, unique style. First used to express an individual style, the different types of animal print have been widely accepted as a fashion norm and are always available to buy in shops in the current day as a retro clothing style.

Houndstooth

Houndstooth is a pattern of black and white diamonds, most often seen in suits, sport coats and shirts. It was originally created as a camouflage for hunting dogs to wear on their bodies to blend in with their surroundings.

The houndstooth pattern was first used in clothing by the upper class of Scotland during the 19th century, but it wasn't until the mid-20th century when it became popular among other social classes.

Traditionally made of a thick woven cloth, this pattern was perfect to wear on a cold day in Scotland, and became symbolic of hunting culture, which of course was picked up by the fashion industry and trickled into the everyday wardrobes of men and women across the country.

Plaid

Plaid is a pattern of repeated stripes. It's named after the Scottish word for "striped," and plaid can be found in men's clothing and accessories, women's clothing, and childrenswear.

It first became popular in Scotland in the 1700’s and was always a symbol of aristocracy which is why it became so popular with punks in the 1980’s, as a sign of rebellion against the establishment.

Not only is it popular with punks, but these patterns have found their way into designer collections and department stores alike, often available today as a check pattern on shirts and trousers.

This is a pattern popular among mod culture as a smart patterned shirt paired with some two tone trousers creates the perfect look for going about town.

Stripes

Stripes are a classic design that can be worn in many different ways. They can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal and vary in widths. Stripes can also be solid or have a pattern to them. There are many color combinations to choose from when wearing stripes; they come in an almost endless variety of shades and hues that make it easy to find one that suits your style!

Often associated with sailors, striped patterns originated from French sailors in the 1850’s. They first wore clothes patterned in this way as it was easier to spot them if they fell into the sea. Slowly, this became the norm for those going out to sea and of course this trend was eventually adopted by the masses as nautical clothing.

Tartan

Tartan is a pattern of stripes with a set, or a repeating pattern of colors. Tartans may be made up of two, three or even four different colored stripes but may traditionally feature red or green.

Tartan is believed to have been first woven in Scotland in the 1700’s, although some historians believe it was actually an invention by Scottish weavers who wanted to compete with English manufacturers who had access to better wool than those in Scotland did.

Tartan was originally made exclusively from wool, but as time has gone on this pattern has been used in many different materials. This pattern is always featured inside harrington jackets, in mod culture, for example.

Knowing The History Of Your Clothes

Take a look at the designs you're wearing. Are you wearing a pattern that has an interesting history? Have you ever wondered about the meaning and origins of your favorite designs? Perhaps it's time to learn more about the patterns that are used in fashion.

You can learn about the history of a design by looking at where it came from and how people used it in the past. For example, if someone wears an outfit with polka dots on it, they may be able to tell you where they got their shirt and why they chose polka dots (because they like them).

You can also learn about different patterns that are used in fashion through research or by asking friends who wear similar clothes as yours why they chose those particular items!

Conclusion

While a fabric pattern may not seem like a significant part of your wardrobe, you can significantly impact people's perceptions of you by knowing how to use it. Even if you don't believe there is any meaning behind patterns, the fact that others do gives them power. Patterns give us insight into the history and culture that produced them, so make sure to keep an eye out for their symbolism!
